Overview of the French Rock scene. Part 1 – 1960-1990s
In this musical workshop, we’ll offer an overview of Rock “Made in France”. Countless French things have been adopted in the USA over the course of the last few centuries. This workshop will allow us to go the other way and to look at an American phenomenon that was introduced in France in the 60s and quickly got adopted. This first workshop on the topic will cover the early stages of the sixties all the way into the 90s. You will learn amongst other things about our must-know French Rock stars, their biggest hits, their worst flops as well as what makes rock
à la française so special.

Review (The Times)
“Waxed moustache, ruffled shirt, a devil-may-care charisma that could stun at 100 paces — Capitaine
Charles-Grégoire Neuville is your quintessential Napoleonic hero. Played with delicious excess by Jean
Dujardin of The Artist, he’s basically a Gallic version of Rik Mayall’s Flashheart in Blackadder. There’s
one difference, though: he’s a fake, a coward who wouldn’t be seen dead in a battle.”

“Set during the French bicentennial of 1989 when the crumbling Pont Neuf, Paris’ oldest bridge, was closed for repairs, Lovers chronicles the mad-passionate romance of Michele, a memory-haunted artist losing her eyesight (Juliette Binoche), and Alex, a derelict who moonlights as a fire-eating street performer (Denis Lavant). The bridge is their homeless home and their bridge to each other.”

Erotic languour turns gradually into fear and then horror in this gripping and superbly controlled
psychological thriller from 1969, now on rerelease. Alain Delon and Romy Schneider play Jean-Paul and
Marianne, lovers who appear to be gloriously happy in a sumptuous villa in the south of France: but more
reflective moments reveal them both to be anxious and unfulfilled.

Review (Washington Post)
“Written and Directed by longtime collaborators Fiona Gordon and her husband, Dominique Abel (“The
Fairy”), the lighthearted comedy “Lost in Paris” is almost too cute for its own good, taking such outlandish
poetic license as a scene of an 87-year-old woman climbing onto the Eiffel Tower — through a tree. If
you can forget logic, however, and just go along for the ride, its absurdity can be endearing.”

” Le papillon is a film about a girl who sneaks away from her absentee mother to go on a butterfly hunting adventure with a grumpy old man. Review (Variety): “Philippe Lioret tackles the stifling prefab conformity of the Parisian suburbs in the ironically titled “Don’t Worry, I’m Fine.” A young woman’s search for her missing twin brother leads her through some potentially pedestrian TV-movie territory, including a standard-issue dysfunctional family and a bout with near-fatal anorexia.”

It’s also a testament to the talents of Agnes Varda, the pint-sized, 89-year-old goddess of New Wave French cinema, and JR, the lanky 34-year-old photographer and visual artist who teams up with the veteran filmmaker to chronicle French rural life.”

“The exhibition will feature fifty paintings by Claude Monet dating mainly from 1913 to 1926, the final phase of the artist’s long career. During his late years, the well-traveled Monet stayed close to home, inspired by the variety of elements making up his own garden at Giverny, a village located about forty-five miles from Paris. With its evolving scenery of flower beds, footpaths, willows, wisteria, and nymphaea, the garden became a personal laboratory for the artist’s concentrated study of natural phenomena. The exhibition will focus on the series that Monet invented, and just as important, reinvented, in this setting. In the process, it will reconsider the conventional notion that many of the late works painted on a large scale were preparatory for the Grand Decorations, rather than finished paintings in their own right. Boldly balancing representation and abstraction, Monet’s radical late works redefined the master of Impressionism as a forebear of modernism.”
“In the first exhibition at the Fine Arts Museums dedicated to the work of Paul Gauguin (1848–1903), an exceptional display of more than fifty Gauguin paintings, wood carvings, and ceramics from the renowned collections of the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, Copenhagen, will be on view for the first time in San Francisco. In presenting these pieces alongside Oceanic art and Gauguin works on paper from the Fine Arts Museums’ permanent collections, the exhibition explores Gauguin’s inner quests and imaginings—his spiritual journey—and how his intimate relationships with his wife, other artists, and people he encountered during his sojourns shaped his experiences, his work, and his development as an artist. Included in the exhibition is a new video work, First Impressions: Paul Gauguin by interdisciplinary artist Yuki Kihara, commissioned by the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco and the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, Copenhagen, that addresses the colonial gaze represented by Gauguin and turns it back toward Western culture.”

We continue on with our Francophonie celebrations by screening the film “Le Brio” – find out more below!
“Le Brio” – Neïla Salah grew up in the Paris banlieue of Créteil, dreaming of becoming a lawyer. On her first day at the prestigious Université D’Assas in Paris, she faces off with Pierre Mazard, a teacher known for his outrageous and provocative behavior. To redeem himself, the professor agrees to prepare Neïla for the prestigious contest of eloquence. Pierre could become the mentor she needs… But they must both overcome their prejudices. The script was inspired by the annual rhetoric competitions held in France’s most prestigious law schools, where students are invited to plead on a wide range of subjects in the most eloquent and imaginative way possible.

Please join us for our monthly Soirée Cinéma on Friday, March 8 for “Mal de Pierres” (“From the Land of the Moon”),
a romantic drama about a woman challenging norms in the 1950’s.
Genre: Drama, Romance
Director: Nicole Garcia (nominated for Cesar Award for Best Director)
Review: As most viewers are aware, the 1950s were not the best years to be a Western woman. With the sexual revolution more than a decade away, a female who challenged the norms was ostracized from polite society or married off to the first comer, like Marion Cotillard’s shameless country girl burning for sexual fulfillment in From the Land of the Moon (Mal de pierres). Please join us for our monthly Soirée Cinéma on Friday, February 8 for “L’arnacoeur” (“Heartbreaker”),
a romantic comedy that mixes glamour and romance.
Genre: Comedy, Romance
Director: Pascal Chaumeil
Review: [L’arnacouer] recalls a time in film history when romantic comedies were amusing and glamorous as well as romantic. There’s an agreeably spiky chemistry between its two protagonists, some acid wit, and surprisingly an element of madcap physical comedy. Being set in sun-drenched Monte Carlo, it even echoes mid-20th century films that used the stunning Riviera coastline as a backdrop for courtship. (The Telegraph)

He secretly prompts Christian with romantic turns of phrase, winning Roxane’s heart with Cyrano’s words.
From award-winning director, stage and cinema actor Denis Podalydès, this classic tale of hijinx comes to cinemas nationwide from the renowned Comédie-Française stage. Please join us for our monthly Soirée Cinéma on Friday, January 18 for “Mauvais Sang” (“Bad Blood”), a poetic crime drama that mixes film noir, science fiction, and unrequited love.
Genre: Crime, Drama, Romance
Director: Leos Carax
Review: The pictures are in charge in Léos Carax’s ”Bad Blood.” Most of the scenes seem to have been improvised in the interests of a striking shot, and the characters are in thrall to the camera. In this, his second feature, Mr. Carax lives up to his billing as ”the natural heir of Jean-Luc Godard,” showing a taste for underground types and milieus, an inventive eye and a tolerance for tedium.

“Two decades spent crisscrossing the globe — playing to enthusiastic audiences from Sydney to San Francisco and Berlin to Beijing — have enabled France’s Paris Combo to create a unique, cosmopolitan sound, a fun-loving mix of swinging gypsy jazz, cabaret, French pop and Latino and Middle Eastern rhythms. Fronted by the charismatic vocals of Belle du Berry whose “onstage demeanor is so expressive that communication is never an issue… Part gamine charm, part playful seduction, her delivery fuses theatrical instincts with jazz inflected phrasing that accentuates the band’s irresistible rhythmic and melodic hooks” (The Age, Melbourne 2017).”
