Avoir un talon d'Achille

Lorsque l'on dit de quelqu'un qu'il a un "talon d'Achillle", cela signifie qu'il a une faiblesse, quelque chose qui va lui faire peur, reculer ou renoncer. Pour connaître l'origine de cette expression, il faut d'abord savoir qu'un lien fort uni la Grèce et la France en ce qui concerne leurs langues respectives. En effet, cette expression très utilisée en France vient enfaite de la mythologie grecque. 

Achille, fils de Pelée, roi de Phthie et de Thétis, une nymphe marine, est un héros légendaire de la mythologie. Suite à l’oracle prédisant la mort d’Achille pendant la guerre de Troie, sa mère décide de le rendre invulnérable. Chose pas si surprenante dans le fond. Quelle mère ne voudrait pas protéger son fils ? Et puisqu’en mythologie, c’est possible, pourquoi ne pas en profiter… Elle s'est donc rendue au bord du Styx, l’un des fleuves des Enfers. Selon la légende, toute personne ou partie du corps d’une personne plongée dans les eaux de ce fleuve devient immortelle. Ainsi, la nymphe marine aurait plongé son bébé dans ce fleuve en le tenant par le talon.

Rassurée, la mère laisse son enfant grandir et devenir guerrier. Puissant et admiré de tous, le héros participe, comme prédit, à la Guerre de Troie. Lors d’une bataille, il reçoit une flèche, envoyée par Paris, dans le talon et meurt. En effet, la technique utilisée par sa mère a eu la malheureuse conséquence de laisser le talon d'Achille vulnérable, devenant ainsi sa faiblesse mortelle.

When someone is said to have an "talon d'Achille", it means that he has a weak spot, something that will scare him, make him back off, or give up.

To know the origin of this expression, you should first know that a strong link unites Greece and France as regards their respective languages. Indeed, this expression widely used in France comes from Greek mythology. 

Achilles, son of Pelee, king of Phthi and Thetis, a marine nymph, is a legendary hero of mythology. Following the oracle predicting the death of Achilles during the Trojan War, his mother decides to make him invulnerable. Something not so surprising in the background. What mother would not want to protect her son? And since in mythology it is possible, why not take advantage of it… So she went to the edge of the Styx, one of the rivers of the Underworld. According to legend, any person or part of the body of a person immersed in the waters of this river becomes immortal. Thus, the marine nymph would have plunged his baby in this river by holding him by the heel.

Reassured, the mother lets her child grow and become a warrior. Powerful and admired by all, the hero participates, as predicted, in the Trojan War. During a battle, Paris shoots him with arrow which hits his heel and he dies. Indeed, the technique used by his mother had the unfortunate consequence of leaving the Achilles heel vulnerable, thus becoming his mortal weakness.
