Cette intervention d’1h15 présentera les circonstances historiques qui ont amené à l’adoption en anglais de plus de 25.000 mots français au cours d’une période de 9 siècles (de 1066 à 1966) puis ces mots français seront présentés par groupes différents.

Né d’une mère anglaise et d’un père français, Anthony Lacoudre a grandi dans le bilinguisme. Cet avocat partageant sa vie entre Paris et New York s’est passionné pour la prédominance des mots d’origine française dans la langue anglaise. Il en a tiré un livre étonnant L’incroyable histoire des mots français en anglais  où l’on apprend que les Américains ne parleraient finalement qu’un français anglicisé. Qui aurait cru que les mots ‘nice’, ‘very’ ou ‘stuff’ venaient du français ?

Anthony nous expliquera comment plus de 25.000 mots français ont été intégrés dans la langue anglaise, des tout premiers mots intégrés au XIIième s. (cardinal, cousin, fruit, justice, lion, prison, service, table…) à ceux intégrés au XXième s. (bustier, camouflage, fuselage, limousine, purée, questionnaire…)

The influence of the French language on English language: identification, categorisation and etymological reflexes

This  1h15 presentation will show the historical circumstances that led to the adoption in English of more than 25,000 French words during a period of 9 centuries (from 1066 to 1966) then these French words will be presented in different groups.

Born to an English mother and a French father, Anthony Lacoudre grew up bilingual. This lawyer splits his life between Paris and New York was passionate about the predominance of words of French origin in the English language. He drew from it a surprising book L’incroyable histoire des mots français en anglais (The Incredible History of French Words in English) in which we learn that the Americans would finally speak only an anglicized French. Who would have thought that the words 'nice', 'very' or 'stuff' came from French?

Anthony will explain how more than 25,000 French words were integrated into the English language, from the very first words integrated into the twelfth century (cardinal, cousin, fruit, justice, lion, prison, service, table…) to those integrated into the twentieth century. (bustier, camouflage, fuselage, limousine, purée, questionnaire, etc.)
