Cette expression signifie réussir à faire parler quelqu’un (sur un sujet ou des informations qu’il ne voulait pas aborder ou divulguer).
Son origine provient d’une maladie causée par les "vers rinaires", parasites qui infectaient le nez. C’était une maladie assez fréquente au XVIIIème siècle et beaucoup de personnes qui étaient touchées par cette infection en avaient honte et n'osaient pas en parler à leur médecin. Pour les faire parler, ce dernier était alors obligé de les soumettre à un interrogatoire. On disait alors qu'il leur "tirait les vers du nez".

This expression means getting someone to talk (about a topic or information they did not want to talk about or disclose).
Its origin comes from a disease caused by "nasal worms", parasites that infected the nose. It was a common disease in the 18th century and many people who were affected by this infection were ashamed of it and did not dare to tell their doctor. To make them speak, the doctor was obliged to subject them to an interrogation. It was said that he "leur tirait les vers du nez".

Cette expression signifie tomber en avant sous l'effet du sommeil.
Elle puiserait ses origines dans un dicton du XVI^ème siècle « donner du nez en terre ». Celui-ci proviendrait du vocabulaire maritime puis celui de l’aviation où un bateau ou un avion trop chargé à l’avant piquerait du nez. "Piquer du nez" va donc renvoyer à une sorte d’assoupissement qui arrive le plus souvent dans une situation inappropriée. Piquer est un verbe exprimant l’idée d'une chute brutale, un affaissement soudain en direction du sol. Le nez quant à lui reflète le visage dans son ensemble pour apparaitre comme étant son élément central.

This expression means falling forward under the effect of sleep.
It draws its origins from a saying of the sixteenth century "donner du nez en terre" which means "give nose in the ground". It comes from maritime vocabulary, and later from aviation vocabulary, where a ship or an airplane too loaded in the front would dive. So "Piquer du nez" is going to be a kind of dozing that most often happens in an inappropriate situation. "Piquer "is a verb expressing the idea of a sudden fall, a sudden collapse towards the ground. "Le nez" reflects the face as a whole to appear as its central element.
