Les anecdotes méconnues de la Tour Eiffel, partie 2

Elle a joué un grand rôle dans le développement de la télévision
Grâce à la tour Eiffel, les Français ont pu voir en direct le couronnement de la reine d’Angleterre en 1953. L’antenne a permis de capter les images britanniques et leur transmission en France.  Au cours de son histoire, l’antenne mise en place à son sommet a été utilisée pour de multiples expériences sur la propagation des ondes. Utilisée également pour la radio, elle sert désormais à diffuser la TNT à Paris.

Un escroc a prétendu la vendre… avant de s’enfuir avec le magot
En 1925, un escroc a réussi à vendre la tour Eiffel, sans jamais la posséder. Victor Lustig a lu un article expliquant que le monument coûtait très cher à réparer. Il a alors eu l’idée de faire croire qu’elle était à vendre. Il a envoyé une offre à plusieurs ferrailleurs expliquant qu’il la vendrait au plus offrant tout en précisant qu’il fallait absolument garder ce projet secret jusqu’à la vente. Deux ferrailleurs sont tombés dans le piège et ont signé un gros chèque. Et puis Victor Lustig s’est enfui avec l’argent. La victime était tellement honteuse qu’elle n’a jamais porté plainte.

Elle n’a pas toujours été marron et trois teintes de couleurs sont encore utilisées
Lorsque l’on regarde la tour Eiffel, on n’aperçoit qu’une seule couleur sur tout l’édifice. Il s’agit pourtant d’un effet d’optique ! Gustave Eiffel avait conçu une technique : pour que la couleur paraisse uniforme vu d’en bas, il faut utiliser trois teintes. Du plus foncé en bas, au plus clair en haut. 

Elle rétrécit pendant l’hiver, bouge pendant l’été
Comme tous les édifices élevés, la tour Eiffel est sensible à son environnement. En hiver, les faibles températures peuvent la faire rétrécir de 4 à 8 centimètres. Lors des fortes chaleurs en été, le métal fait bouger le bâtiment. Le fer est en effet soumis au phénomène de dilatation thermique ce qui peut agrandir la tour de quelques centimètres et peut avoir aussi pour conséquence d’incliner la tour. 

D’ici 2024, elle devrait avoir un nouveau visage
En 2024, la tour Eiffel sera plus que jamais au centre des regards du monde entier, les Jeux olympiques se déroulant en France. Plusieurs aménagements sont prévus pour favoriser les promenades. Un grand jardin reliera le Trocadéro au monument, les deux étant actuellement coupés par une route. Des kiosques d’information et des stands de restauration devraient par ailleurs être installés sur l’esplanade et dans les nouveaux jardins autour de la tour Eiffel.

A crook pretended to sell it… before fleeing with the loot
In 1925, a crook managed to sell the Eiffel Tower, without ever owning it. Victor Lustig read an article explaining that the monument was very expensive to repair. He then had the idea of ​​pretending that it was for sale. He sent an offer to several scrap dealers explaining that he would sell it to the highest bidder while specifying that this project absolutely had to be kept secret until the sale. Two scrap dealers fell into the trap and signed a large check. And then Victor Lustig ran off with the money. The victim was so ashamed that she never filed a complaint.

It has not always been brown and three shades of color are still used
When you look at the Eiffel Tower, you only see one color on the entire building. However, this is an optical effect! Gustave Eiffel had designed a technique: for the color to appear uniform when seen from below, three shades must be used. From darkest at the bottom, to lightest at the top. 

It shrinks during the winter, moves during the summer
Like all tall buildings, the Eiffel Tower is sensitive to its environment. In winter, low temperatures can cause it to shrink by 4 to 8 centimeters. During the high heat in summer, the metal causes the building to move. The iron is in fact subject to the phenomenon of thermal expansion which can enlarge the tower by a few centimeters and can also have the consequence of tilting the tower. 

By 2024, it should have a new face
In 2024, the Eiffel Tower will be more than ever at the center of attention around the world, with the Olympic Games taking place in France. Several facilities are planned to encourage walks. A large garden will connect the Trocadéro to the monument, the two being currently cut by a road. Information kiosks and food stands should also be installed on the esplanade and in the new gardens around the Eiffel Tower.
