Artiste incontournable du courant post impressionnisme, Paul Gauguin a excellé par son talent avant-gardiste. ​​Tout à la fois chef de file de l’école de Pont-Aven et peintre des tropiques, le « sauvage » Gauguin fut une personnalité hors norme.

Gauguin a participé à la construction du canal de Panama

Il était peintre mais aussi un grand précurseur de l’école de Pont-Aven, qui est un mouvement artistique né à la fin du XIXe siècle. Paul Gauguin fait également partie des terrassiers qui ont participé à la construction du canal de Panama. En 1887, il écrit à sa femme : « Je dois creuser de 5h30 du matin à 6h du soir ». Un immense projet de construction qui a coûté la vie à plus de 25 000 travailleurs. Quant à l’artiste, il est tombé malade et a contracté la fièvre paludéenne.

Vincent Van Gogh et lui ont été amis... et c'était compliqué !

Pendant des années Gauguin et Van Gogh ont entretenu un échange épistolaire, ils se confiaient l'un à l'autre et parlaient de leur art. En 1888, Gauguin décide de rejoindre son ami peintre Van Gogh à Arles. Ils vivent alors ensemble pendant un peu plus de deux mois mais leurs caractères ne semblent pas tout à fait compatibles. En effet, ce serait même suite à une violente dispute entre les deux amis que Van Gogh se serait tranché l'oreille !

L’appartement de Gauguin pillé par sa maîtresse

Van Gogh ne serait pas le seul avec qui Gauguin aurait eu des désagréments...Au cours de l’année 1894, les difficultés économiques persistent. Le peintre vient de s’installer à Concarneau avec sa nouvelle maîtresse : Annah la Javanaise.Bizarrement, il se trouve impliqué dans une sombre bagarre. Pendant 2 mois, il reste scotché à l’hôpital entre la morphine et l’alcool. A son retour, son atelier a été complètement dévalisé par Annah.

Une œuvre de Gauguin a été vendue à 265 millions d’euros

Le fameux tableau Quand te maries-tu ? réalisé en Polynésie par Gauguin en 1882, a été vendu à la mort du peintre pour seulement… 7 anciens francs (aujourd’hui à peu près €30). 100 ans plus tard, elle a été achetée 265 millions d’euros par une famille du Qatar.
